6 Astonishing Facts about Hair Loss

By Amy Candrl

Unless you’re one of the few lucky individuals out there, you will more than likely experience some thinning or even balding at some point in your life. While hair loss is a common occurrence, it doesn’t have to rule your life. In observance of National Hair Loss Awareness Month, we’ve compiled a handful of interesting statistics that may surprise you:

It Doesn’t Just Affect Older People – While losing one’s locks tends to happen to the older crowd, onset can occur much earlier than you may expect. According to the American Hair Loss Association, about 25% of men who experience hair loss will begin noticing signs before they reach 21 years of age.

Male Pattern Baldness Doesn’t Affect All Men – Millions of men (about 95%) will experience some degree of thinning or loss of hair, but not every man will have to deal with it. Two-thirds of men will start noticing less of a mop on their tops before age 35, and about 85% of men will experience significant hair thinning once they reach age 50.

Women and Children Can Experience It, Too – We usually think of only men having to deal with losing their locks, but several women suffer silently with hair loss. Approximately 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. Children can also experience hair loss, which can be caused by fungal scalp infections, alopecia, or even wearing hair in too tight of a ponytail.

It Can Signal Other Health Problem – Researchers have discovered that hair loss can be linked to more serious health issues such as prostate problems and coronary concerns. Hair loss doesn’t always correlate with health problems, so it’s always smart to talk to your doctor as soon as you notice any thinning or extra loose hair on your pillow.

You Have More Than You Think – The average person has somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 hair follicles on his or her scalp and will usually lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day. As we age, our hair will grow more slowly, and new hair follicles will take a bit longer to appear, which can contribute to thinning.

You Can Do Something About It – If you’re experiencing hair loss, you don’t have to live with it. There are plenty of procedures at The Lifestyle Center that promote and restore your lovely locks, including NeoGraft, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), low level laser therapy, and topical treatments.
