Eliminate the Angry Frown

By Amy Candrl

The area between the eyebrows is called the glabella. There are 3 muscles involved that cause this area to contract creating the "angry frown." At The Lifestyle Center we offer all three neuromodulators approved by the FDA; Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are effective at relaxing the muscles which cause this frown. All three neuromodulators are cleared by the FDA for the temporary reduction of muscle contraction in this area. Results will typically last 3-4 months for most patients. In addition to softening or eliminating the appearance of the wrinkles from these muscles contracting, the neuromodulators can help prevent these wrinkles from becoming deeper or more permanent if injected on a regular basis. There is no significant difference in the duration of activity among the three neuromodulators.

Two of the muscles involved in the glabella pull down and in, hence when those muscles are relaxed, you will often see a raising of the mid and lateral eyebrow. Most patients find this to be a desirable effect. In approximately 3% of patients, a slight drooping of the eyelid can occur. This usually improves over a 3 to 4 week period but can persist for longer. If you are having Botox or one of the other neuromodulators for the first time, it is best to do it when you do not have a special event in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

In addition to the frown lines, neuromodulators such as Botox can be used to treat wrinkles at the sides of the eyes often referred to as "crow's feet" and the lines across the forehead. This treatments are "off-label" but very commonly performed. There are other specialty areas that can be treated in the lower face in the hands of an experienced injector. Studies have also shown that Botox is effective for reducing the frequency and severity of headaches. At The Lifestyle Center in Clayton, we have several clients who come in for treatment of their headaches.

St Louis is a very competitive market with most nurse injectors having a cost of $10 to 12 per unit of Botox and physicians $12 to $15 per unit. Some centers feature "Wrinkle Free Friday" to get their lowest price. Dr Moore offers the best price every day. In addition, there may be incentives on some of the neuromodulators that can further reduce your price from time to time.
