Popular Skin Treatments for Age Spots

By Amy Candrl

Age spots, colloquially known as liver spots, are a stereotypical sign of old age. And while they do indeed tend to appear as one grows older, they are not a reliable sign of one’s age or attitude. If you have already begun to develop age spots along your face, you probably understand the frustration and disappointment that can come with such changes.

Unlike other cosmetic flaws, though, this problem does not require surgery. Through the use of advanced skin rejuvenation technology, patients can improve the color and texture of their skin with quick and minimally invasive procedures. If you are looking to treat age spots, refer to the treatments listed below, as they are just a few of the spa services offered by our St. Louis cosmetic center.

What Are Age Spots?

Age spots are oval areas of discoloration in the skin, which are typically tan, brown, or black in color. These spots are the result of pigmentation from the sun, and therefore tend to occur in areas that are most exposed when outside. The backs of hands, the shoulders, and the face are common places for age spots to develop. While this discoloration is usually harmless, it can be cosmetically undesirable, especially when located on the head or around the face. Consequently, some people seek to reduce the prevalence of such spots along with similar signs of aging in skin.

FotoFacial RF® for Age Spots

FotoFacial RF® is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a combination of pulsed light energy with radiofrequency energy to combat sun damage. Age spots, wrinkles, rosacea, and enlarged pores are some of the most common problems treated by this technique. In about 30 minutes, you can gain smoother, more evenly colored skin through the following process:

  • First, a cooling gel is applied over the treatment area to increase comfort.
  • Pulses of light energy and radiofrequency energy are then alternated over the skin gently.
  • The energy lightens blemishes and increases collagen and other connective tissues, encouraging healthier skin.

The treatment is usually performed every three weeks, up to five or six times, so that patients can see a significant improvement in their skin. The best results are usually achieved for discoloration that is pink, brown, or similarly colored due to melanin, making this an excellent treatment option for age spots.

Fractional Resurfacing for Age Spots

Fractional resurfacing is traditionally performed with lasers that penetrate the skin to encourage collagen production, thereby rejuvenating surrounding tissue. However, lasers can be more painful and invasive than alternative options, limiting their appeal to some patients.

To remedy this, we offer fractional resurfacing through radiofrequency energy instead. With Matrix RF resurfacing, patients can enjoy a relatively gentle procedure that can still reduce many traditional skin imperfections, including wrinkles, acne scars, dilated blood vessels, and age spots. Alternatively, Fractora utilizes biopolar radiofrequency energy, which is particularly effective for discoloration on lighter skin tones. If you choose to undergo Fractora treatment, the following procedure will take place:

  • A topical anesthetic gel will be applied over the area to numb it.
  • Pin electrodes will then be applied to the skin, which will be used to deliver the energy subcutaneously.
  • Heat is transmitted through the electrodes and throughout the skin, encouraging restructuring of tissue and production of collagen.

After three to six treatments, most patients see a visible improvement in the health and appearance of their skin.

Supplemental Treatments

Patients who are looking to reduce age spots also tend to have other skin irregularities as a result of growing older. From wrinkles to loose skin and cellulite, the effects of aging can be quite apparent. Although either of the above techniques can be effective on their own, many of our skin treatments can be improved through their combination. For a more comprehensive treatment plan for your skin, consider any of the following:

  • Venus Freeze for firmer, tighter skin
  • ReFirme for firmer, tighter skin
  • Dermal fillers for volume and reduced wrinkling
  • BOTOX® injections for reduced wrinkling
